SPELL CHECKING:
A lot of people who install Office 2007 on Windows XP, have problems with spell checking. Some find it only works in French, others find it doesn't work at all. I suppose Microsoft has no fix because they don't want Office 2007 to work with a retired operating system from 2001. Microsoft says "You no longer have spell checking capabilities", and "you need to use a third-party spell checker".
We can do better...
To turn the dictionary back on, try this:
- Open Microsoft Word...
- Click: Microsoft Office Button (top left)... Word Options (bottom)... Add-Ins (left)... Manage (bottom drop-down list, select disabled items)... Go...
- Click on the English dictionary and re-enable it...
- Close Word and restart.
- Your spell-check should now work.
If that doesn't work, you may have to install Proofing Tools from a previous version of Office:
- Run Setup
- Select Add or Remove Features (you may need a product key)
- Turn Off ALL of the product installations. (Right-Click icon and select "Not Available")
- Under "Office Tools", set "Proofing Tools" to "Run all from My Computer".
Yet another option would be to use the new Microsoft Live Mail client which includes its own spell checker.
Alternately you could always use a third party spell checking program such as Spell Check Anywhere.
