NEW FTP ACCESS - PLEASE WRITE THIS INFORMATION DOWN AND KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE
If we host your website, this is the login information you'll need if you want to develop, publish, edit, upate, maintain and/or promote your own website. This gets entered into an FTP program. You need an FTP program to work on your website, or if you prefer, we can provide these services for you.
- FTP Server URL - We will give it to you
- Username - We will give it to you
- Password - We will give it to you
- Default Directory - httpdocs/
HOW TO USE AN FTP PROGRAM - WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DOWNLOAD A COPY OF YOUR ENTIRE WEB SITE AND BACK IT UP BEFORE YOU START MAKING CHANGES.
Read This First - You need strong computer skills before you can work on a website. You must know how to comfortably navigate the Windows folder structure, and be able to easily download and install software. If you don't know how to Select, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Open, Close, Download, Search, Install, Uninstall, Update, Upgrade, Save, and Save As, then you should take some more basic computer cources. We don't mind answering a quick question, but we just don't have the time to walk you through every mouse click.
You should also know how to edit HTML code before you work on a website. If you don't know HTML, you should probably let us manage your site until you take some web design cources. We don't have time to teach you HTML, and if you mess up your site, you'll need us to fix it, and we charge for our time.
Preparation - Just download and install an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client program. An FTP client program is used to upload and download files to and from your website. You can download a free FTP client program called Leech FTP, or another good one is FileZilla. For demonstration purposes we have used Leech FTP here.
Directions :
1. Start the Leech FTP program, and if the login window shown below doesn't open, click on the lightning bolt icon. (near the top left of your screen)
2. Enter the login information we gave you (URL, Username and Password), and click OK.
3. You should now be connected to the web server, and what you see should resemble the picture below (unless you used some other program).
Leech FTP shows 4 main areas :
- Top Area - Lists events as they happen
- Bottom Left Area - Lists files that are in queue to upload
- Bottom Center Area - Lists files and folders on your computer
- Bottom Right Area - Lists files and folders on the remote web server
The files and folders that make up your site are usually kept in the "httpdocs" folder on a Windows server, or in the "htdocs" folder on a Unix server. To upload and download web pages, just navigate to the appropriate folder and drag and drop if using Leech FTP (or right-click and select "upload" or "download" if using FileZilla FTP).
When your done, log out by clicking on the little man near the top right. For FileZilla FTP, click on the "Disconnect" icon in the toolbar up top.
